Welcoming Remarks & Keynote: "Building Ourselves to Dismantle Disparities"
Join us for welcoming remarks by Susana Cordova, Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, and a special keynote presentation by Dr. Tara Raines, "Building Ourselves to Dismantle Disparities": School-based mental health professionals have a commitment to promoting Trauma Sensitive Schools. Doing this requires alignment with an intentional culture that promotes safety, empowerment, and healing. This session will set the stage for why we engage in this work. It will also foster reflection on what must be done to prepare ourselves to be fully present as we embark on this complicated academic year. Finally, participants will take the time to develop a preliminary plan to dismantle systems within our work that perpetuate disparities.

Breakout: Creating Inclusive and Equitable School Community to Build Positive Climate and Culture Through Restorative Practices
Limited Capacity seats available

Using restorative practices to create collaborative environments and positive learning engagement is complicated when we do not first assess the mindset that sustain unhealthy school systems. In this session we will learn what Partnership Education is, and how to overcome some of the systemic  barriers that make the change hard. We will review implicit bias and the impact of ACES, in addition to frameworks for addressing the body trauma responses within us all. To connect theory to application, we will provide foundational tools to address these barriers and build a restorative and trauma informed culture that better supports individual mental health by building relationships and repairing harm.

Breakout: From Historical Trauma to Modern Oppression: Understanding Racism, Race-Based Trauma, and Cultural Healing
Limited Capacity filling up

This session will cover how historical events have led to intergenerational trauma, and how ongoing oppression and systemic racism compound historical trauma. The experience of historical trauma is often triggered by discrimination and systemic racism, leading to race-based trauma. Finally, the training covers approaching clients and families with cultural humility and promoting cultural healing through community-level anti-racism and leveraging cultural traditions and practices as strengths to promote resilience. The learning objectives are as follows: 1) Understanding of historical trauma and how trauma is culturally transmitted; 2) Understanding of how historical trauma has led to oppression and systemic racism; 3) Understanding of how individuals are affected by historical trauma, and how racism is a trauma trigger; 4) Awareness of white fragility and implicit bias; 5) Ability to leverage one’s culture to promote resiliency

Breakout: Grief, Loss, and Post-Traumatic Growth
Grief, Loss, and Post-Traumatic Growth - Monica Padilla, Trauma-Informed Practices Specialist, Denver Public Schools

Appropriate for any attendee

This session invites attendees to acknowledge the present state of our nation amid two pandemics--COVID-19 and systemic racism. The session outlines connections between our present-day circumstances and the grief/loss realities of individuals who have experienced trauma (e.g., death, illness, financial insecurity and racism). This session names present losses our communities are feeling and the effects of ongoing and unacknowledged racism. The second half of the session presents strategies (for adults and students) to cope with stressful and negative reactions to the present crises and introduces the concept of post traumatic growth--the ability of individuals to change in meaningful ways after traumatic events. Attendees will have an opportunity to connect with other participants by sharing their experiences through the chat box or in breakout groups.

Breakout: Schools and White Supremacy - Understanding the History
Limited Capacity seats available

This session will explore the history of white supremacy in public schools in Colorado. We will explore how our public education system responded to the Civil Rights movements, modern school funding, racial integration, and the public/private/charter divides that inform the landscape of the educational world today. We will be examining all of this through the lens of critical whiteness so that we can all work toward ending white supremacy for all of our students. We hope those who participate in our session leave with 1) an awareness of the history of white supremacy in Colorado's public education system, 2) 1-2 ways their specific school role has maintained these structures, and 3) 1-2 actionable ways participants can begin to deconstruct white supremacy within their role and within DPS.
